Misunderstood Destinies

"Ah, I see" he spoke, but in a quiet tone. He nodded to her. "So, now what shall we do, Layla? Thou art free to move where thou wishes, no?"

"This is true. I believe firstly we should head to my home. Hopefully, mother will have left breakfast. You see, my mother is the Medicine Nurse in the village. If in the case you are wounded or looking for potions and such, she should surely have a bottle or two."

"Hm, that could be of great help. When should we go see the Guild?" he asked

"Whenever you are ready. Perhaps we should stay here tonight and see how much information we can find. We have no leads about the Mages except for Elder Ramona and the Guild. Maybe with some luck, we could find something to aid your magical issue."

"I see" He said. He seemed deep in thought, then shook it off. "Well, let's head to your house first"

Layla led the way to her home. The house was a medium-sized hut with two beds. The room was decorated with a set of paintings and a fireplace. A dream-catcher was hung above it. A bookcase was to the left of the door. There was an open curtain to the right of the door. Layla looked around. Her mother wasn't home. Soup was in the hanging cauldron above the fireplace.

Jargos looked around, then sat down on the ground out of the way.

"Feel free to take either of the beds as a spot to sit, Jargos. Even help yourself to food. Mother must have freshly made it." Layla put her staff against the wall and sat next to the fireplace. It had been a bit breezy outside. She was a tad cold. "You know, if there is any question you have, about the village or myself, I will answer. You're in a new environment with magical people who never trust outsiders. They'll tell you different information than I will, I'm sure."

Jargos kept himself on the ground, but prepared to ask a few questions

"What makes thou and myself different? I wish to know thine opinion. Fear not, any answer you have shall not offend me"

"To be honest, in a way you could possibly say we are not different. We both were born into this world and given a purpose. Given a world to grow up in. And, in another way, you can say we're opposites with similarities. You follow that of your animal instinct. I follow closer to human. You are of a different species than I am. My abilities are more mental than physical compared to yours. However, we both understand some things that others do not. And as for one similarity I can name immediately: You and I both know how to live off of the land in our own way. "

"I see, thou art as wise as thou art fair. Pray tell, why art the people here so mistrusting off me?"

"I'm not entirely sure. However, I believe it's because of our original leader's choice of isolation. Stories say that ages ago our people were at war with the Dark Mages. Some of these Mages are like me. They are elves. Thus, a rival to us. We use light magic. Light and Dark is classified as if magic is used to purposely hurt others for dark purposes or not. Some say that there was not a winner. Rather, the two clans isolated themselves from the rest of the world as a truce to avoid destruction. For example, the Light Clan could say, 'if you'll stop destroying the lands we'll leave you alone forever'. No one knows the true story. The Elders once said that only a select few today know the true story because they were sworn to secrecy to prevent lighting the old flame."

Jargos sighed, then nodded. It seems politics were abandoned by his forefathers for a good reason. He relaxed a bit

"I believe isolation has just left my brothers and sisters here unwilling to accept those that are just different from them. I became a Warrior to travel and explore. This is a dull, provincial village. No danger has come our way in some time. However, I expect something to happen. The way the leaves fall, the way the wind blows... I can feel that something may happen in the future."

"Thou art correct, The winds blow of change, but I have yet to hear the tidings" He said

Layla nodded. "So, another question, do you have? Feel free to ask away."

"Do I frighten thee? If not, than what?" he asked with a straight face

"At first sight, you did have me on edge for a temporary amount of time. But, for one thing to consider is that I'm a new graduate. I haven't been outside this village but a few times. Thus, there is still much for me to see. However, when I first saw you, worried or not I knew you were in danger than thus came to your aid willingly."

Jargos smiled, then sighed a bit.


"Now, any questions for me?"

"Tell me, have you been in contact with the Mages prior to the day we met?"

"Only in stories, Layla"

She pondered on the thought for the moment, then pushed it aside. "You've told me much about your people. About where you come from. What brought you to Garlan? I know nothing of the kingdom, to be honest."

"I was brought there against my will, for a purpose I didn't know"

"Perhaps we will find out eventually." Layla stood up and took a bowl from a cabinet. She put soup in it and placed a spoon in the bowl. "Care for some?"

"Perhaps" Jargos wondered why he was going to Garlan, then heard her ask about soup "Oh, why yes, I would take a bowl"
